When selecting materials for outdoor applications such as building facades, outdoor signs or LED lighting covers, the ability to withstand direct sunlight is always a primary consideration. A question we often get from manufacturers and project engineers is: Is acrylic plastic UV resistant?

What Does UV Resistance Mean for Acrylic Plastic?

Cast Acrylic: Liquid resin that is poured into molds. It offers significantly better thermal resistance and impact strength, making it suitable for thick sheets or heavy structural fabrications.


Extruded Acrylic: Made by forcing melted resin through a precision die on an ongoing basis. This method gives us the ability to produce uniform lengths, wall thickness and tight tolerances.


Extruded acrylic is the industry standard for continuous items such as an acrylic profile, light diffusers, rods and tubing. Extrusion provides consistent light distribution and precise dimensional control without losing the same high UV resistance as cast sheets.

How UV-Stabilized Additives Enhance Extruded Acrylic Profiles

While the pure acrylic resin itself is naturally UV resistant, the external environments vary greatly across the globe. Projects installed in high altitude places or desert areas are exposed to the severe sun radiation.


The plastic extrusion factories add specific UV stabilisers to the acrylic resin pellets during the extrusion process to maximise longevity. These chemicals are like an internal sunscreen:


UV Absorbers: They absorb the incoming UV rays and turn them into harmless heat energy.


HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers): They neutralize free radicals formed by sunlight before they can damage the polymer chains.
